This post is about what you can expect as a Keto beginner. Beginning a Keto lifestyle comes with an expectation to lose weight. What it often doesn’t come with are a few hiccups in the beginning. It’s the restriction of carbs and being in ketosis that makes it so effective. It’s the promise of decreased hunger and increased energy that make it so inviting.

But what happens when it doesn’t start out this way? We give up!

So before you get discouraged, let me share some of the unpleasant things you can experience in the beginning on Keto that WILL PASS. A Keto lifestyle is not always just something that works for some people – it works for those who stick it out in the beginning.

Being Mentally + Physically Foggy

The first few days are typically manageable, but after 3-4 days you may experience some fogginess and an inability to be productive.

This happens because your brain is used to running on glucose. Before your body begins to burn fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates, it will need to adjust by using up all the glucose stores.

The good news is, once you’ve made it past this point the cloudiness will clear and you may feel more mentally clear than you did prior to Keto. In about two weeks, your body should be burning ketones as fuel and the fogginess will have passed.

Reduce fogginess by:

  • Starting Keto with intermittent fasting.
  • Eat more low carb vegetables with iron, potassium and manganese (typically green leafy veggies).
  • Remember your MCT’s when you are feeling tired!
Digestive Issues

Constipation and diarrhea are common when you begin a Keto diet. Either can be caused by dietary changes, water consumption and a lack of dietary fibre.

Reduce Digestive Issues by:

  • Drinking lots of water.
  • Get enough sleep to reduce stress.
  • Eat more low carb veggies that are high in fibre.
  • Take a Gut Health Supplement (this is the one I recommend)
Decreased Strength and Endurance

Your body will need some time to adapt to using another form of fuel for energy. You may even feel so drained that you are unable to workout. Not to worry though, like with the other inconveniences, your body will adjust in time.

For now, help your body to adjust by:

  • Make sure sure you are meeting your macros!
  • If you workout, try temporarily adjusting the intensity.
  • Those low carb veggies are a bonus here too. Again, the iron, potassium, and manganese will keep your energy levels consistent.

Well, that’s a quick snapshot of what COULD happen in the beginning of your Keto journey! Please keep in mind that not everyone experiences these challenges, and if at any point if you’re concerned please contact your doctor!

Staying hydrated, reducing stressors, replacing electrolytes (here’s a link to free samples of the ones I take), and a positive attitude will be your best friends! Otherwise, ENJOY being the healthiest you, you have ever been!
