If you are new to keto or have been on again and off again due to a lack of results, this blog will outline the 5 biggest mistakes people make while beginning keto.
When I began this journey years ago, there was so much information on why keto is terrible for you rather than how to make it work.
Over the years, I have been through enough trial and error with myself and the community that I found ways to create results that last. Fortunately, with all of the research done over these years, it has now become proven that keto can and will improve your health dramatically; if it is done right.
With that being said, this low carb, high fat diet has changed tens of millions of lives, and I want to share the 5 biggest mistakes people make that have a negative impact on their results.
The 5 Biggest Mistakes on Keto
Ignoring calories.
For many years, people believed that a keto diet was just as much meat and fats as possible if the plan was free from carbs.
This could not be further from the truth, and learning portion sizes has made all the difference when it comes to our success and health. While counting calories is not entirely necessary, it is vital to know how much food you consume.
A diet high in fat and moderate protein will make your body feel full faster and for longer periods. Listening to your body is a skill we need to have if we will be successful!
Not enough veggies.
I mean, I would love to live off of steak, bacon, and butter; but we still require the fiber, vitamins, and nutrients that vegetables offer.
Not all vegetables are low enough in carbs to be considered keto, but some of my keto-friendly favorites include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, and spaghetti squash.
Not counting net carbs.
To be successful on a keto diet, you must learn to track your macros! Once you become accustomed to keto living and being in ketosis, it may not be necessary for you to continue to track your macros because you will just know (I still track on maintenance though!)
But, in the beginning, counting your macros every time you consume food and paying attention to your body is vital to your success. If you are a part of the ucanketo Facebook group, you will see which macro calculator apps are the most user-friendly (amongst a million other helpful tips!).
Not being prepared for the keto flu.
The truth is, not everyone experiences the keto flu – but everyone who does experience it considers quitting! Being prepared for headaches, decreased energy, achy muscles, extreme fatigue, and trouble focusing will make all the difference.
The keto flu may last a few days while your body purges all that sugar from your system, but it does not last forever.
Do your research, so you know what to expect, drink lots of water, stay hydrated with electrolytes, and be prepared to rest! This too shall pass.
Not drinking enough water.
I know this is on the list for everything. Most people simply do not drink enough water, and many of us are living in a constant state of dehydration. Living a keto lifestyle requires more water and electrolytes than pre-keto, so this is a necessary addition to the list. Staying hydrated will help to prevent the keto flu, and it’s also a good idea to add keto electrolytes to your water.
My personal favorite is LMNT, and they come in a bunch of delicious flavors! Drinking more water while keto does not ever have to be boring. When you are not adding electrolytes, adding slices of lemon or limes to your water is a great way to spice it up.
These Mistakes are Now No Longer Mistakes
When you know better, you can do better. This is why I began the ucanketo group; it is a means to share knowledge and information so we can ensure our success and improved health is a priority!

Thanks Amy for all the great tips! I hope you are feeling better! Take time for rest!
Great info.
Thanks amy! We need reminders to “tighten things up” so to speak. There Is so much ketoinfo out there it’s hard not to get lost. Thanks for being a steady voice!
I have a hard time giving up fresh fruits this time of year. Also, the carbs in alcohol kills me. But, I got my order of trim along with a few other items, so I hope this helps me stay on track better. Appreciate you, Amy
Thank You for always being real about life. Sometimes when I’m struggling you send a blog that just gets me back to reality.
Thank you for the reminders 😊
This is great!! I came back to Leto after 2 years because my nod was in constant pain. My joints hurt so bad. I knew I had to cut down carbs. What I haven’t been doing though is counting calories 🫣. I’m kinda stuck on 8 lbs lost in 6 days. I have also started to fast. Thank goodness I can have lemon in my water!! Thank you!!!
Thanks so much! Needed this reminder again. I too am recovering from a surgery. But need to get back on track. Love you and this community. Take care of you too!
So so true about the water! I’ve learned to drink a gallon EVERY DAY!! Sounds like a lot but it becomes easy and a habit!! I actually bought a gallon bottle that has reminders every 2 hrs!! It give me the drive to stay on track!
Thank you Amy.
Excellent list! The other thing I learned from you is “READ the LABELS”! Thank you for sharing so freely all these

Hello Amy,
This blog was very helpful!!
Good reminder for those of us who have gone on and then gone off of keto. The fact that you Amy, cares so much about us as if we were all best friends really makes reading and doing so much easier than trying to figure it out ourselves. Thank you for being the guiding light and the encouraging person in this journey.
