What exactly IS a "keto" diet?

Our bodies use the food we eat for energy. If sugar is present in the diet, the body will use sugar for fuel, first, before it burns or uses any stored fat. 

A keto diet aims to minimize or eliminate sources of sugar, including carbohydrates, allowing the body to enter “ketosis” state. At this point, the liver can produce a chemical called “ketone” that helps your body convert fat instead of sugar, into energy.

I'm not losing weight on a keto diet. What should I do?

Weight loss isn’t a guaranteed result of a ketogenic lifestyle and diet. Many people do lose weight with keto because they’re managing their cravings, meal times and counting calories. However, it’s possible to gain or maintain your weight, depending on factors such as sleep and exercise habits, age, hormone levels, medical conditions and, of course, mindset.  

If you’re not losing weight, first consider whether you’re eating too much or consuming too many calories. If you consume more energy/calories than you’re using or burning, you won’t lose weight.

What are macros, and how are they measured?

Can I maintain a keto diet as a vegan or vegetarian?

Yes, though it’s more difficult to keep your carbs low enough and protein high enough without animal protein sources.
