A road trip can be so much fun, but if you are new to Keto it could feel almost intimidating!
What if you’re hungry and you don’t know what you can snack on?
What if there doesn’t seem to be anywhere to stop for snacks you are familiar with?
Well, like with everything else Keto, preparation is the key! This doesn’t always need to be prepared Keto snacks or a cooler for your road trip (which can take the spontaneity out of it), but it’s just having an awareness of what Keto snacks or foods are easy and convenient while you are on the road. It is also about being able to speak to people about your food restrictions in a way they can understand and serve you best!
I have made almost every Keto mistake, so I’ll leave you with this amazing list …
Staying Keto on a Road Trip:
- Google is your friend! Map out local restaurants if you are planning to stop for a meal and Google their menu! That’s it. Take a look at what they offer, and see if there are suggested changes that can be made to accommodate you, or better yet, if they just have Keto friendly meals!
- When you order food, or if you are looking for Keto suggestions…..tell your servers or gas station attendant that you are Keto and see what they suggest (if anything). The point is, you never know what someone else can share with you until you ask. Some of the best keto suggestions I have gotten while eating on the go have come from complete strangers!
- Pack snacks or buy snacks you know are Keto! Almonds, cheese, beef jerky, pepperettes, cheese crisps, fat bombs, bacon, nut butters, prepared Keto snacks….These are all great ideas, just remember to read labels (ALWAYS) and watch your portion sizes! It’s so easy to get carried away when you’re having fun and not paying attention to how much you are enjoying your Keto snacks. (TONS of great snack ideas in ‘Amy’s Cupboard on this website!)
- Take a bullet proof coffee with you! The fat in a BP coffee can help to curb hunger so you aren’t tempted to reach for non-keto snacks! Some of my favorite coffee’s come in instant single serving travel packs as well, this makes it so much easier! Alternatively, make sure you have lots of water to stay hydrated!
- Intermittent fasting is a great way to plan to stay on track! With intermittent fasting you can plan for two big meals during the course of a day. This is easy enough, and if you are a planner, it makes the planning process much easier! Have a big, fat filled breakfast and a plan for dinner later in the day can help you keep snacking to a minimum and it makes the stress of finding Keto foods disappear!
Road trips should be fun and exciting!
… and if you’re like me, in the past they included a lot of poor food choices and Dr. Peppers. Staying Keto while on a road trip can be just as fun, and your body will feel better if you manage to stay on track with what it has been used to! How many times have you travelled or gone on a road trip and felt absolutely disgusting afterwards? Now you can still maintain your Keto lifestyle AND experience the fun of a road trip at the same time!
So tell me, what have I missed? If you are a road tripper, what is a helpful tip that has worked for you?

Thank you for this Amy. We’re taking a couple of trips this fall and I’ve been trying to figure out how to navigate this. Especially the hotel breakfasts. There’s nothing Keto there 😂
I’ll do the IF along with the coffee sticks and creamer for breakfast. One of the comments mentioned individual packets of Pure. I’ll look into that.

3 wks ago we were at hospital for a small procedure for my hubby. What should have been a 4-5 hr event ended up being over 8 hrs.
So today we had to go back for an even shorter procedure & I had almonds, cheese sticks, cheese crackers (made from just parm) and LOTS of water!!!
We were home after 3.5 hrs and of course I didn’t eat all those things but at least I was prepared this time‼️
