I began my Keto journey more than a handful of years ago, and I wish I had someone to debunk all of the keto myths I was told.

I’m sure you can imagine the inaccurate things shared by well-meaning friends and family about how I was ruining my health.

With all of the information in the world at our fingertips, even today, I know you have probably heard many of the same things I have.

Many myths about keto continue to be shared online, but I am here to clarify things for you.

They are well-meaning…

I mean, yes, friends and family are (I’d like to think) well-meaning. My biggest frustration came from those insisting that my Keto lifestyle was harming my health. The truth is, I’m sure you can relate, that my pre-keto lifestyle was killing me.

I lived off Oreos and Dr. Pepper!

I can assure you there is zero nutritional value in either. Overweight, exhausted, moody, and sleepless; my skin was suffering, my hair was thinning, and I had a drawer of medications I would reach for every day just to feel a little normal.

If you ask me, this is not healthy!

How many of y’all have heard any of these Keto Myths?

  1. How do you expect to be able to live off bacon and cheese for the rest of your life? Well, as I’m sure you all know, Keto living is much more than cheese and bacon (both are delicious bonuses, of course). We are more than capable of having healthy, delicious, and nutrient-dense Keto options when we eat.
  1. Your body needs carbohydrates! Yes, it does. However, the average North American eats astronomically more carbs than is necessary for survival – this is why we are obese! Veggies and fruit have enough carbs to fuel our bodies that we don’t need starchy, carb-dense, or processed foods to fuel our bodies. Carbs like rice, bread, grains, cookies, potatoes, and even those found in fruit turn into sugar when we digest them.
  1. All of that animal fat will kill you! Actually, Keto ingredients are better for you than what you’d normally be eating. Good fats are just…good for you, and fat does not make you fat. We use butter instead of margarine (which I could just stop at to prove my point). Grass-fed animal meats are encouraged, nitrate-free bacon and uncured deli meats, and sugar are considered as harmful as other toxins and additives in what we eat!
  1. You’ll be starving all the time! I have yet to starve. Keto foods are satisfying and will keep you full for extended periods because it’s the protein that keeps hunger at bay. Carbs make you crash and feel overly hungry because of the sudden spike in blood sugar, then the crash follows.
  1. There are better ways to lose weight! Really? Because first things first, this is not just about weight loss. It’s about fuelling my body the best way I can. It’s about health, nutrition, and feeling better than I ever have. Keto has allowed my body and my gut to heal. I’ve been managing an autoimmune disease while on keto, and I have been sleeping better than I have in decades!
People share myths because they wish they could also make significant life changes.

There are always going to be people who will doubt your choices simply because they are choices they wish they could make for themselves. Some of these people will be those who are closest to you. This has nothing to do with you, and I hope you know that!

Deciding to live the Keto journey is life-changing because you’ll look and feel better and have a chance to face parts of yourself that you may not have met yet. That part of you who researches makes informed choices, stands up for yourself, and learns to love and nurture the body you have.

Here’s to your newfound courage to love on yourself!

I hope you have found this information about the top 5 keto myths I have heard useful!
